The Portland Mercado suffered a tragic loss on January 3rd, as a fire severely damaged the main building. As a result, Barrio, Xocotl, and all small businesses that depended on the commercial kitchen have been displaced. Additionally, the adjacent food carts are closed indefinitely while the property remains in flux.
This is a terrible loss for the community, and we are eager to support relief and recovery efforts for the businesses impacted by this disaster. We are pleased with the outpouring of support and want to help aid the efforts by sharing ways people can contribute.
- To support the Portland Mercado’s onsite small businesses, donations can be made to their Fire Relief Fund.
- To support Barrio directly, there is a GoFundMe page set up to help owner, Chris, navigate the challenges ahead.
- Local small businesses will be hosting fundraisers, too. On Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 6 & 7, several businesses will be donating a percentage of sales toward relief efforts. This will allow the community to support the cause while shopping, drinking, and eating locally. The list of participating businesses is growing, so follow our event page and/or Instagram to stay up to date.
- More to come. Other businesses and community groups are planning fundraisers, so stay tuned as those get announced.
As always, follow Portland Mercado and their business community directly to learn of their efforts and ways to support them directly.
